NAADHS VOLUNTEER CALENDAR
January: Feds Feed Families Month
Feds Feed Families is a Nationwide, Government-wide effort, led by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in partnership with the Chief Human Capital Officers (CHCO) Council. We do this because food banks across the country face a severe shortage of non-perishable items. Federal employees nationwide are stepping up to meet this challenge by gathering 1,000,000 pounds of food for families in need. For details on how and where to donate, visit www.fedsfeedfamiles.gov or contact volunteer@naadhs.org.
February: National Heart Month / Cancer Awareness
Did you know that February is American Hearth Month, and not because of Valentine Day? This day was created to help raise public awareness of heart disease. NAADHS wants to also raise the awareness of cancer this month. Let’s wear something red on Friday, February 26, 2010, National Wear Red Day. We will also be participating in heart and cancer awareness events. To find out how you can help contact volunteer@naadhs.org.
March: American Red Cross Month
President Barack Obama has proclaimed March as Red Cross Month across the United States, a tradition upheld by every U.S. President dating back to Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943. During the month of March, Red Cross chapters across the country have numerous activities planned to celebrate this annual observance. Red Cross Month is a great time for people to get involved with the Red Cross – to give blood, take training in CPR and first aid, volunteer, or give a financial gift to help when the next disaster strikes. Contact your local Red Cross chapter to find out how you can help.Click here to locate your local Red Cross office or contact volunteer@naadhs.org.
April: National Volunteer Month
The dictionary defines volunteer as a person who performs a service willingly and without pay. This is your opportunity to choose a cause that you feel strongly about and volunteer in some form or fashion. If you are not sure how to volunteer your time feel free to contact volunteer@naadhs.org.

June: Teen Homeless Awareness Month
The National Coalition for the Homeless defines homeless youth as individuals under the age of eighteen who lack parental, foster, or institutional care. One out of every three homeless people are under the age of 18. Let’s help combat this by working with the many teen homeless shelters around the country. NAADHS has adopted the Covenant House in New Orleans; however, there are many more that need us! To find out how you can help contact volunteer@naadhs.org.
July: “Water to Thrive” Month

August: Back to School Supplies Month
August means all school age children are going back to school. With this comes the need for back packs and school supplies. We are asking members to host “Back To School” Drives in their building so that these items can be donated to local schools in your respective communities. To find out how you can help contact volunteer@naadhs.org.
September: Clean up a Park Month
This is simple and self explanatory. Pick a park in an inner-city location of your city and clean it up. NAADHS has partnerships with several paint, lumber and playground companies that can assist in the donation of supplies. Sometimes, the city government has everything needed to refurbish the parks and all they need are the bodies. To find out how you can help contact volunteer@naadhs.org.
October: National Disability Month
The annual celebration of Disability Employment Awareness Month heightens awareness while recognizing the contributions of Americans with disabilities to both our workforce and our society. During this month we pay tribute to the accomplishments of both men and women with disabilities whose work helps keep the nation’s economy strong and by reaffirming their commitment to ensure equal opportunity for everyone in America. To find out how you can help contact volunteer@naadhs.org.
November: Youth Mentoring/Tutoring Month
Some NAADHS members have heard “the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way”. Together, let’s come out strong for the kids. National Mentoring Month was created to acknowledge the importance of providing guidance in the lives of the nation’s youth. There are so many ways this can be done. We can adopt a school, work with tutoring organization and many other ways. The opportunities are endless. To find out how you can help contact volunteer@naadhs.org.
